Due to the war in Ukraine, Canada along with many other countries are facing an urgent need to transition away from fossil fuels...the article "Does nuclear power belong in ESG funds" from Investment Executive shines the light on how nuclear power could play a vital role in this transition and whether or not it belongs in ESG funds. Canada is facing a need for energy while also a need to transition away from fossil fuels as quickly as possible. Due to the Paris agreement, we are unable to create new fossil fuel infrastructure if we wish to meet the agreed upon goals and achieve net zero by 2050. So the real question is where does Nuclear Power come in and for ESG and sustainability investors, does nuclear power belong in ESG funds?
Investor opinions as well as fund managers opinions seem to be split. One side believing nuclear to be an answer to the issue on hand and the other side believing nuclear should not have a place within society or within ESG funds. Nuclear has been proven to cause less deaths according to The International Nuclear and Radiological Event Scale since the 1950s only 3 'severe' nuclear events taking place. As the paper states we may not be able to survive on nuclear power forever, however it may be the answer in this transition period.
